DIY Wild Boar Bacon
Last week I purchased a whole wild boar and was very excited to make some bacon out of it. I have made DIY bacon before but pork, even local and pastured, still receives grain ration …and isn’t my highest choice - wild boar on the other hand I will go….hog wild…on ; )  The boar came with two sides, which I trimmed away the ribs and made some slamming braised rib...

60K pushed back - a little
Due to possible weekend event conflicts I’m pushing my 60k debut back a few weeks to the last race in the Capt. Karls Night Trail Series “The Shoe” on August 27th. Wahoo.  Short in actual news, so for giggles here is my “McMillian Running Calculator” predictions based off of a recent 5:30 mile run on track. I’ll be using these numbers as good ranges for my...

#DIYROI
I’d like to bring out something that I think about fairly frequently. #DIYROI.  I’m a big proponent of a DIY or Do It Yourself. While there are other factors at play here including volume and quality - lets assume that when you make something yourself it is usually of high quality and you can easily do a large volume almost as easily as doing a small amount once your in the groove.  ...

60k in 13 weeks?- eh, Why Not!
Did a bit of marinating over the past two days and decided I needed a goal to work towards this summer and zeroed in on a 60k -  specifically “The Falls” 60K part of the Capt’ Karl’s NIGHT RUN (yes with a headlamp) series put on by Tejas Trails.  I haven’t run an ultra since my trail 50k’s in Spring ‘09 and have never gone the 60k distance so the...

1 Year Out - Quitting Veganism
This is a re-hashed/re-vamped version of a post I did after leaving my 5 year stint as a vegan and I thought it would be interesting to revisit it as it chronicles a bit of my nutritional journey leading unto adopting an locavcore/archevore/primal dietary path.  Yea its freaking long #dealwithit  Act I My “journey” began when I was 18 and working as a cashier at a mainstream...

Race Report: Rogue Trail Series - "The Ranch" 10K
Despite all my hoop-la from yesterdays post, today’s race was a total fail - here’s how my morning went down.  4:15am - wake up due to temperature drop, cover up with blanket, consider just staying up and getting a head start but fall asleep again before processing  5:15am - alarm goes off, wake-up and turn it off 7:00am - wake up. again. race is 75 minutes away and starts in 30...

Trail Swagger
(This picture has nothing to do with the post - I just find it really amusing #dealwithit )  While for the most part I’ve completely revamped my training from when I was a traditional endurance athlete, I recently had to contend against an old urge - to compete at every opportunity possible.  With exciting recent and upcoming opportunities such as: Spartan 300 Challenge, Splash N Dash,...

#gastronomicsmut: Liver and Onions
Liver and Onions w/ homemade kraut and CSA salad  Liver tends to be a rather polarizing food. Which is a shame because it is incredibly nutrient dense..full of great protein, folate, vitamin D and other goodies…it also tends to be pretty darn cheap so totally Win-Win. If prepared properly the irony/musky liver flavor can be neutralized and you’ve got a nutrient dense and cheap...

Project Mayhem
or: Broject Mayhem  Last week the boys of Crossfit Central threw down the brohammer hard during Project Mayhem - a dudes only challenge consisting of 7 group scored max efforts: 1RM deadlift, max handstand pushups, 2 Pood kettlebells swings, sand filled keg clean and press, max pullups, car pulls/push, and giant tire flips. Finish up the evening with BBQ, gluten free beer, male bonding  and...

#protip: Healthy..on a Budget!
“It’s too expensive to eat healthy” / “It’s too expensive to eat local”  This is an oft repeated refrain I often hear from folks and wanted to put my word in on the issue .  Now granted if you are living off of low-cost industrial foods…then even just moving to real foods is going to be more expensive but that is a much bigger issue than I care to...

#gastronomicsmut: Chicken Ceviche
Chicken Ceviche + Jicama + Homemade Kraut  As the subtitle of the blog suggest I do consider myself a “locavore”, as the majority of my calories come from the local food system and do my best to set up systems (raw dairy co-op, meat co-op)  and promote established avenues (CSA, farmers markets) so to allow other folks access to the best food possible.  That being said, I do eat...

#recoverymaster: Mobilize
be a supple leopard ….erm or tiger  In the second installment of the #recoverymaster series we’ll touch on my personal cocktail of mobility work to aid in recovery and stay juicy (or: SUPPLE) at all times.  While I don’t have a full time desk job I still spend alot of time at the computer. While I do work standing up occasionally, most of my laptop time is still spent sitting...
